Religion as weapon

I went to the hairdresser yesterday. I always go to the shop that is a few block form me, owned by a really nice Mexican-American gentleman and all the workers are from Mexico. So I thought, but this time a woman from El Salvador was cutting my hair. We had a nice chat. She was born in El Salvador, escaped from the war with his family as a child, lived in Nicaragua for a while and then moved to California. She shared with me her father’s strong opinion about how in El Salvador religion (Catholicism) was used to oppress the people. It was just another weapon in the hands of the 14 powerful family that owns the country. Her father is not against religion per se, just its abuse.

After I got trimmed I watched a 1925, Soviet silent movie 1925: Battlehsip Potemkin. In it the same idea came up. There was a (popa)-priest in it, who prayed for calming the unruly mind of the revolutionary sailors. Also, the sailors’ first act of defiance was the breaking of a dinner plate that had the words of the Lord’s Prayer (Give us our daily bread) painted on it. Both of these episodes reinforced the communists’ anti-clerical attitude. Interesting coincidence to experience these two incident within an hour.
