50 First Dates (USA, 2004)

50 First DatesThew most memorable for me about this movie was that it was at a drive-in movie theater. This is the first time in my life I have been in one of those. Now I could check that off from the list of experiences I wanted to have and didn’t. The place operates as a flea market during the weekend, that I visited a dozen time in the last 9 years. I remember that in the first years they had these little speakers on a stand at every second parking lot. And when you were watching a movie you were supposed to put one of those into your car. But they disappeared after a few years. And now I just had to tune the car-radio to a certain very short range station and could listen to the movie. This was a chilly night to this solution was fortunate, because we had to keep the windows close and even turn on the heating occasionally. I was expecting that they would not let us in, because we had a few beers and some tortiall chips- salsa with us and I assumed that this works like other cinemas: no outside food. But my expectation was wrong and we did have a mini-party while watching the big screen. I guess I should say something about the movie itself. I don’t have much. I got slightly more than I hoped for, because it was such an 80s movie. I was expecting an ultra lightweight comedy on an oft proved (or just tested) recipe. A character that starts her life/memory is such an easy way for twisting plots. But unlike memento here it was pretty straightforward. Adam Sandler was not as gross as in some of his movies. And Drew Barrymore is still very cute. But visually there was nothing exciting in this love story. The Music was nice though, with two Cure songs. It tells something that the from these two considerations the very end of the movie was the best. Visions of the arctic sea with the most amazing rendering of the “Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world” melted into one song by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’oles. I have to get that song somehow, too bad it is not on the soundtrack record.
