Bronenosets Potyomkin (Battleship Potemkin, 1925, Soviet Union)

PotyomkinHaving seen the famous Odessa steps sequence several times in my life it was time to put it in context. The word is: effective. My empathy for the sailors grew continuously. The injustice, the hipocracy, the maggot infected meat and the officers reactions to it were all blood boiling. This a black and white movie not just in its lack of colors, but in the metaphorical sense too, the good ones are 100 percent good, the bad ones are absolute evil. I recognize that this is how propaganda is done. Bit this is so well-done. The point where I realized how much the intended influence worked was when the popa was killed. Nowadays I have a soft heart for people of faith and why I am aware that clergy often is not a progressive force in societies it still felt wrong to depict this one so dark. I don’t have to mention that this is the alpha and the omega of editing. If I want to get spirited about injustice I will just have to recall scenes from this. Better than any motivational speaker.
