My first garage sale was more successful than I hoped for but less than it could have been. A few days before I hauled over a carful of my belongings that I was planning to sell to my friend’s house. We also did a bit of shopping and bought some bagels and orange juice and champagne. The idea was to make this event like a little party with mimosa cocktails. Unfortunately two days before he big event we learned that my girlfriend had to work that day from 9.30 AM. She was upset by it and so was I. But who took it hard was her mom, who thought it unfair thinking that she will have to do the work. I believe she was pacified though, when she realized that I did most of it. Two day before the big signs were posted on the neighboring major streets so people looking for the house would find it. One day before the event I sent out an email to my friends and posted it on a popular, free online bulletinboard.Saturday I got up around 6 AM, filled my car with more things and drove over to her house. We packed out everything and arranged the objects. By the time we finished it around 8 AM the first people started to show up. At this time of the day there was still fog and mist lingering around. And it was a bit chilly. And that’s how the weather was for most of the day. The Sun came out for very short periods of time only. However I was so busy for the whole day that I forgot to put on caps or even suntan lotion. It was chilly after all. Despite this I did manage to get a minor sunstroke. After we packed up I had to go to bed and I slept a few hours in the middle of the day. That is very rare for me. Unfortunately I had to get up around 6 PM again, because I was due to help out at the Rio Theatre. I spent the first half of the next day in bed again and then I was back to normal again. Except that the skin on my forehead started to peel off. But back to the garage sale. The end result is that I sold about $50 worth of objects while my girlfriend more than the double of it. She was happy that she got rid off the larger objects, such as her bookshelves. I did manage to sell a chair, but my bookshelves and entertainment center (or more precisely my father’s) didn’t sell.I guess I will try them at a later point at my house, which is better located for this kind of thing. The most interesting part for me was that I had to interact with al sorts of (unknown) people for a few minutes each. I used to love to do it, when I worked at canteens and I haven’t interacted this way for a long time. It was fun, made me nostalgic toward those years. But I would not want to this as a living again.
