I got accepted to UCSB. However only as a “Pre-Sociology” Major. I checked the website and realized that before I can declare Sociology as a Major I have to take 4 more courses: a research methods course, two US History courses and a Diversity course. Once I am done with those I can sign up for upper division courses, of which I would need to do 10 to get my BA. The 10 courses are: 1 – Method 1 – Theory 1 – stratification/inequality 2+2 – 2 from 1 of the 9 subject areas and 2 more from the other 8: Methods, Gender, Life Course, Culture, Stratification, Organization, Economy, Deviance, Theory 3 – Upper division sociology courses Although I didn’t get answer from UCLA yet, but that being my first choice I checked out the same kind of information. There I could take upper division courses right away, although I am supposed to one more lower division course (research methods), but I can take that paralel to the others. To get my BA I would need to take 15 upper courses: 2 – Theory 3 – Core areas, 1 from each: Interactions, Institutions, Inequality 5 – Upper division sociology courses 4 – Upper division course from any of the allied fields: Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Psychology 1 – Writing course At UCSD I would need to take 2 more lower division classes before I could declare my soc. major. Then I would need 12 upper division courses: 2 – Theory and Method 1 – Culture, Language, and Social Interaction 1 – Organizations and Institutions 1 – Comparative and Historical. 7 – Elective from the 4 categories above. So altogether I would be 14 courses away from my BA at UCSB or UCSD and 16 courses away at UCLA. I am also thinking of taking a minor, but will wait with that after I decided where to go. I am getting the air-conditione fixed in my car this week. Assuming UCLA (and UCSD) will send the answers and they will be positive I will drive down at the second week of May to check out all 3 campuses to make a more informed decision. But I don’t want to go down there witout AC. In other news: I got my AA degree in the mail. It says “with High Honors”. I didn’t even know they have categories at the AA level. (I know about Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude, but only for BA/MA/PhD.)
