On the other hand in the Canadian drama Les Invasion Barbares (The Invasion of the Barbars) they had almost too much (character, compared to the one I have seen right before it.) The dying father, the superrationalist son, the sailor daughter, the lovingly hating ex-wife, the old lovers, the drug addict helper, the gay friend were all likeable figures on their own rights. According to the short preview (based on which we selected this movie to see) we were supposed to see a satire on the US attitudes. We could laugh a few times, but the jokes were mostly on the Canadian health system. However this movie was a serious drama about a dying history professor and him making peace with everyone and everything. Touching at the appropriate places, sweet at others and human throughout. It was unfortunate that I recently saw Big Fish, a much better movie of similar genre and even saw a preview of a third movie working on the same theme.
