I voted for Kerry and he didn’t become elected. I voted yesterday “yes” on ASI and it still didn’t pass. Associated Students is an organization “serving and representing the students of UCSB”. Each quarter, each undergraduate is paying $9.10 towards this organization. From which they support a lot of activities and other student organizations. This fee was not raised in a long time so they started an initiative to raise it. They asked all students to vote on the $10.40 raise. I thought that the 20 bucks would be a no brainer, because it is such a small amount compared to others and AS does provide a lot of service. But I was wrong. The school paper’s official opinion was that we should vote no on it, because AS is not transparent enough, they are not accountable enough with their funds. While I agree that they should make the budget available to the public, but its current lack was not a good enough reason for me to deny the raise. Also the full page ad in the paper against it was published on the day of the beginning of the 3 day voting period. It turend out to be too effective. For the process to be valid a minimum of 20% voter turnout was required. No problem there. 3,865 out of the 18,121 students voted, that is 21.3%. However to pass 2/3rd of us should have supported the initiative. Only 63.16 % (2441 people) did. Too bad.
