We’ve seen the movie under the auspices of the professor who was a personal protege of Cassavetes. Therefore it was impossible to stay impartial. I didn’t love the movie because it made me uncomfortable. But I assume that’s exactly the expected reaction. It is so honest, human psyche stripped down to the bones and then some. Everybody cheats everybody. But there is no escape, even that is just a routine. Anomie in the midst of prosperous fifties. Because of the prosperity traditional meanings for life have no power and new ones didn’t emerge. There is a lot conversation in this movie. But it doesn’t cover up that there are no words to say when you are cannot even commit suicide. That’s the brutality of modern, “progressive” western society.
