This will be a great reference book. But I didn’t appreciate it enough when reading form beginning to end. It is a compilation of hundreds of sources. I acknowledge the author/editor’s depth of knowledge and familiarity with the sources. Furthermore his ability to synthesize all of this into a single coherent book. The problem for me that it is not exactly coherent. It is impossible to reconcile the differences in the cast Jewish tradition. Hertzberg introduces them, explains them, but in his eagerness to present it as a unified whole, he oversteps some logical boundaries for me. Nevertheless this is the best single volume of reference to explore Judaism. This can be used as the base to venture out from.
