Sivi kamion crvene boje (Serbia-Slovenia-Germany, The Red Colored Grey Truck , 2004)

kamionThe Hungarian title of this blockbuster was “With a Gray Mercedes”. It had a huge red truck as the central vehicle around which the road story was woven. But the truck driver was color blind, for him everything was gray. This message came through strongly: it doesn’t matter what color your skin and heart is. It is even more admirable considering the era and scenes the truck went through. The first days of the war in Yugoslavia, June 1991 sets the background for his and his hitchhiker trip. As the movie moves along we get to like the trucker as he cannot resist stealing the truck, despite that he just got out of prison for this exact same crime. He is lovable because he is a good person in the midst of developing war, corruption. He is simple in his ways and God-fearing beliefs, but in no way simpleton. The destination is unimportant for him compared to the feeling of driving. The girl who he picks up is slightly more driven towards the seashore from inland. But mostly she is just running away for a few weeks until she can get back the capital for her abortion. I don’t want to say more about the plot line because that’s where the heart of the story is. This was a blockbuster in its native country where more people was interested in it than in the latest Kusturica movie. It is in the same genre but with much more humor and love.
