I got exactly what I wanted from I Hate Valentine’s Day: ultralight, predictable entertainment. It was written and direct by Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It is also a romantic comedy, even her co-star is played by the same actor John Corbett, whom I adored as Chris in Northern Exposure. The premise: she doesn’t believe in long term relationships and has a rule of going out no more than five dates with any single guy. As you might guess he becomes the exception to the rule, when she really falls for her. The only thing I didn’t expect was to learn by the end of the movie why and how she developed her rules. But it does get revealed and that is the only teaching moment in the movie. It was fun to watch as a background movie why I was doing something else on my computer. It had a couple of sweet moments and characters but no deep revelations. Not that I wanted any.
